Robert Drewitt, aged 28, and William Drewitt, aged 26, found guilty on an indictment for the highway robbery of James Dudman in the parish of Eastbourne on 5th December 1798: robbing him of a leather portmanteau (valued at 3/-) and 6 leather bags (valued at 6/-), the property of the King. On this indictment they were sentenced to hang.  This was a mail robbery and the other charges detailed contents of the stolen Arundel, Petsworth and Midhurst bags. After execution their bodies were hanged on chains on North Heath Common near Midhurst
